Merger of Vörumiðlun ehf. and Fitja-Vörumiðlun ehf.

Analysis

The Competition Authority has been reviewing the merger of Vörumiðlun ehf. and Fitja-Vörumiðlun ehf. Each company transports goods in Iceland using lorries, and the main business of Vörumiðlun and Fitja-Vörumiðlun is road freight transport. Vörumiðlun is based in Sauðárkrókur and has mainly transported goods between Reykjavík and the rural areas of North-West Iceland and the Dölur region. The largest shareholder in Vörumiðlun is Kaupfélag Skagfirðinga svf., which owns all of the company's shares. Fitjar-Vörumiðlun provides scheduled transport between Reykjavík and Reykjanesbær, as well as transport within Reykjanes. The Competition Authority's investigation has revealed that there is no reason to believe that concentration on individual sub-markets in the food production sector could be a basis for a failure of competition. Following an investigation, the authority has concluded that there is no reason to take action regarding this merger under Article 17 of the Competition Act No. 44/2005.
