Complaint by Og fjarskipta hf. (Vodafone) concerning the alleged abuse by Landssími Íslands hf. of its dominant position in the market for mobile telephone services

Analysis

The competition authorities received a submission from Vodafone, which alleged that Landssími Íslands hf. had abused its dominant market position in relation to mobile phone services. The case concerned an offer made by Vodafone to residents of Akranes, providing a special promotional deal on mobile phone services. Shortly afterwards, Landssími presented residents of Akranes with an offer for mobile phone services. The Competition Authority's conclusion stated, among other things, that the companies' offers were in many respects different and that it could not be assumed that Landssíminn had undercut Vodafone with its offer. The Competition Authority considered there was no indication that the purpose of Landsíminn's offer was to force Vodafone out of the market for mobile phone services for individuals, but rather that the offer in question had been part of the company's response to Vodafone's offer. The Competition Authority's assessment was that Landssíminn's response in the matter had been proportionate and did not constitute a breach of Article 11 of the Competition Act. The Competition Authority considered there was no reason to intervene in the matter.
