The Competition Authority has been reviewing the acquisition by Samkaup hf. of the retail business owned by Miðbúðin ehf. Samkaup operates 50 stores across the country and is the third-largest player in the sale of groceries in grocery stores. Miðbúðin's operations consist of the running of a single grocery store in Reykjavík. The Competition Authority's investigation revealed that there is no reason to believe that the concentration on the relevant market as a result of the merger could give rise to significant competition concerns. Furthermore, there is no reason to believe that competition will be otherwise significantly impaired. Following an investigation, the Authority has concluded that there is no reason to take action regarding this merger under Article 17 of the Competition Act No. 44/2005.
