A Competition Authority report on grocery prices in Iceland: trends and an international comparison

Analysis

A discussion paper from the Competition Authority states that food prices in Iceland are among the highest in Europe. Food price increases have been greater in Iceland than in neighbouring countries in recent years. Since 2020, food prices in Iceland have risen significantly more than in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway. The trend has been particularly noticeable since 2022, when prices for various product categories began to rise faster than before. For example, the price of meat has risen more than most other categories, dairy products have risen somewhat above food prices in general, and sugar and confectionery have also seen significant price increases, partly due to rising raw material prices on the world market.
