Today, the results of an in-depth analysis were presented, in which the Competition Authority, the government and stakeholders, under the coordination of the OECD, have identified barriers to competition in the tourism and construction industries. 438 recommendations for improvements are put forward, designed to strengthen these sectors for the future, for the benefit of consumers and the general public, business, and the Icelandic economy.
Páll Gunnar Pálsson, Director-General of the Competition Authority:
„The competitive assessment is based on a simple methodology: putting yourself in the shoes of, for example, a young couple who are looking to get a new roof over their heads, follow them as they find a plot of land, work out how to use it, get the house designed, then bring numerous different trades together for the build, with the necessary supervision, get the house ready and move in.
And to put yourself in the shoes of the tourist who decides to go to Iceland, lands at Keflavik Airport, chooses a mode of transport to their destination, books a hotel, has something to eat, looks around and then disappears.
And the question we are seeking an answer to is this: How can we make the lives of these people easier and more affordable? Not just for them. The fact is, if we manage to make the lives of these people easier and more affordable, they won't just benefit, but so will the businesses operating in a more competitive environment, and their employees will benefit, the cost of construction will be lower, the framework for tourism will be stronger, purchasing power will increase and the economy will be stronger.“
