The Competition Authority has submitted its views on the transport plan, which is currently before the Althingi. The Competition Authority's submission to the Althingi's Environment and Transport Committee is available. here.
In its review, the Competition Authority draws attention to ways of strengthening competition in various areas related to transport. Measures in line with the Authority's recommendations would, among other things, have a positive effect on the development of pricing in Iceland in the long term.
In the review, the Competition Authority recommends the following:
- To Barriers to competition related to freight transport be taken up for specific consideration and appropriate amendments made to the transport plan, with the aim of strengthening competition in transport, both land and sea, in accordance with, inter alia, the opinion of the Competition Authority. 1/2023 (section 2 of the review).
- That the transport plan will address measures to reduce barriers to competition in air travel to and from the country, in transport between Keflavik Airport and other domestic destinations. Particular attention must be paid to the framework for the operation of Keflavik Airport, see the opinion of the Competition Authority. 1/2022 (chapter 3 of the review).
- That consideration be given to how Public procurement and tenders be used to achieve increased efficiency and cost savings in the construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure (chapter 4 of the review).
