In light of media coverage of the Competition Authority's investigation into the broadcast of matches in the Football World Cup, and due to reports on the matter on the Consumer Association's website, the Competition Authority wishes to make the following statement:
Shortly before the broadcasts of the football World Cup matches began, the Competition Authority received submissions along with numerous complaints regarding Sýn's subscription offer for the channel during the World Cup. The Competition Authority considered whether there were grounds to take interim measures in accordance with Article 16 of the Competition Act. With such a decision, the Competition Authority can, upon the fulfilment of certain conditions, temporarily remove a situation that contravenes competition law.
The Competition Authority considered that there were no grounds to make an interim decision in the matter. However, the Competition Authority has taken the matter for further investigation and is now seeking the views and evidence of the parties to the case. Inevitably, the handling of such an administrative matter takes longer than to reach a conclusion before the World Championship concludes. This follows from the nature of the case and the rules on administrative procedure.
