In media coverage yesterday and today, it has been claimed that supermarkets were engaging in illegal collusion. On this occasion, the Competition Authority would like to encourage anyone who believes they have information about breaches of competition law to bring this information to the Authority's attention. Information can be provided by telephone or at the competition authority's office, and staff are available to meet with the person concerned. Information can also be provided via the Competition Authority's website. www.samkeppni.is Anonymously or under a name. Confidentiality is maintained in all communications, if requested.
It is desirable that tips about possible competition law infringements are as detailed as possible, e.g. which company is concerned, when the infringements took place, how the collusion was carried out and how extensive it was. By its nature, information that is detailed about the facts of the case is more robust than unsubstantiated allegations.
Further information on alleged breaches of competition law is a prerequisite for the Competition Authority to assess whether there is cause to launch an investigation. Those who believe they have such information are therefore encouraged to bring it to our attention.
Media coverage has also revealed information about price changes in connection with price surveys. Parties can bring this to the regulator's attention, alongside reports of competition law infringements. The Competition Authority will review them and direct them to the appropriate body, such as the Consumer Authority. The Consumer Authority is responsible for enforcing the legal provisions on unfair commercial practices and price labelling.
