
The Competition Authority has recently been considering several cases concerning the competitive conditions in the taxi market.
The matter concluded with the Competition Authority publishing an opinion to the Minister of Transport, on a matter of public interest. No. 2/2007 due to anti-competitive provisions in the laws and regulations governing taxis. The Minister is therefore urged to ensure that the restrictive laws and regulations are amended so that competition can flourish in the taxi market for the benefit of the public.
In addition to addressing an opinion to the Minister of Transport, the Competition Authority has taken three decisions concerning taxis and their operation. In a decision No. 28/2007 The authority concluded that a group of taxi drivers who worked for the BSH and Aðalbílar taxi ranks in Hafnarfjörður and Reykjanesbær, respectively, had engaged in illegal collusion when they agreed to terminate their contracts with the ranks. Decisions No. 33/2007 and 34/2007 concerning one-year derogations for the taxi operators Hreyfli on the one hand and BSR on the other to set maximum fares for each of their respective stations.
