Here is the Competition Authority's second article of the year. In it, Páll Gunnar Pálsson, CEO of the Competition Authority, reviews competition in the dairy industry and explains how competition there benefits the public and dairy farmers.
A recent opinion from the Competition Authority to the Minister for Agriculture, which addressed harmful concentration in the dairy industry and the effect of the Farm Produce Act on competition, has prompted comments and responses from the representatives of dairy farmers.
Sigurður Loftsson, chairman of the National Association of Dairy Farmers, writes an article in Morgunblaðið on 16 December, in which he comments on the Competition Authority's reasoning and puts forward arguments which he seems to believe demonstrate the opposite. The chairman's article is a good opportunity for the Competition Authority to further explain its point of view.
