The Competition Council has annulled the takeover of Steindórsprent-Gutenberg ehf. by Oddi Printing House Ltd. The Council considers it clear that the takeover would have led to a serious distortion of competition and an unacceptable concentration in the printing market, which would lead to the combined company being able to set its pricing and commercial terms without regard to its competitors or customers.
On 12 October, Oddi, the country's largest printing house, bought almost all the shares in Steindórsprent-Gutenberg, the country's second-largest printing house. In addition, Oddi owns the printing houses Grafík and Offsetþjónustan. In the opinion of the Competition Council, the takeover would have significantly increased concentration in the printing market and would have been likely to cause a serious distortion of competition to the detriment of consumers. This applies whether the print market is considered as a whole, or the market for printing books and magazines on the one hand, and other printing, so-called 'simple print jobs', on the other.
