Today, the General Court (the EU's court of first instance) delivered a judgment in the case of the American company Intel against the European Commission. It had concluded that Intel had very seriously abused its dominant market position and breached the EU and EEA competition rules. It had done so by granting discounts to computer manufacturers (e.g. Dell, Lenovo and HP) in exchange for them using only or predominantly microprocessors from Intel. The Commission fined Intel for this infringement, amounting to just over one billion euros. It is the highest fine the Commission has ever imposed on a company for breaching competition rules. In its judgment today, the General Court upheld the Commission's finding of Intel's infringement and the fine imposed on the company.
