Following the coverage in Kastljós last night and in response to media enquiries today regarding the investigation into possible infringements by Eimskipafélag Íslands hf., Samskip hf. and related companies, the Competition Authority wishes to make the following statement:
As the Competition Authority has previously publicly confirmed, it is now investigating whether indications of illegal collusion between the companies and possible abuse of a dominant market position are substantiated. The investigation began with searches of the companies in September last year, and further evidence was gathered last June.
The Competition Authority's investigation concerns the companies involved. It is still ongoing. However, it is the statutory duty of the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate possible breaches of competition law by the directors or employees of companies, following a complaint from the Competition Authority. Such a complaint has been submitted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The Competition Authority will not comply with media requests for access to the case files. Furthermore, the Authority is not prepared to confirm the reporting that appeared on 'Kastljós' last night. It should be specifically noted that the investigation has not yet reached a stage where any conclusions can be drawn regarding its outcome. The investigation is progressing well, but a great deal of work remains to be done in analysing the data and evidence.
