
On 31 May last year, the Minister of Trade instructed the Competition Authority to investigate the causes of price developments in foodstuffs during the last months of 1999 and the first months of 2000. Prices of foodstuffs, particularly imported foodstuffs, had then risen contrary to what might have been expected in light of exchange rate developments and foreign price changes.
The Minister for Trade has today received a report from the Competition Authority on its survey of price developments in the food market. The survey covers the period from the beginning of 1996 to the end of 2000. Furthermore, the report provides a more detailed discussion of the food market and the business practices of retailers and other operators in the market. The Competition Authority chose to make the survey more comprehensive than originally planned, so that it would provide a clearer picture of the food market and how it has developed.
