On 18 April 2000, the Minister of Trade instructed the Competition Authority to carry out a review of management and ownership links between companies operating in the Icelandic market. Previously, MPs from the Social Democratic Alliance had submitted a request for this in the Althingi. A comparable review was carried out at the behest of the Althingi in 1994.
The report presented here is based on figures from 1999, whereas the 1994 review was based on figures from the previous year. Between 1993 and 1999, there have been significant changes in Icelandic business life. New industries have emerged and others have thrived. New owners and a new generation of managers have emerged. State-owned companies have been privatised and sold. With increased business freedom, foreign companies have freer access to the Icelandic market.
However, despite these major changes in Icelandic business life and its environment, it is noteworthy that the findings of this review are similar to those of the 1994 review.
