In March 2001, the findings of a competition authority investigation into illegal collusion and anti-competitive practices by distributors in the fruit and vegetable market were published. At the same time, the competition authority drew the government's attention to the fact that the then-current system of import restrictions on vegetables facilitated illegal collusion among distribution companies. The Minister of Agriculture was therefore directed to take the initiative to have the provisions of the Customs and Agricultural Produce Act that hindered the trade in vegetables reviewed. In accordance with these recommendations, the Minister for Agriculture took steps to have the tariffs on common types of vegetables abolished in early 2002.
Following the above-mentioned measures, the Competition Authority has for two years conducted monthly surveys of the prices of fruit and vegetables in supermarkets in the capital region. These surveys show retail prices on a specific day each month, along with a comparison from the same time the previous year. Their purpose is to enhance consumer price awareness and thereby promote competition and price discipline.
