The Competition Authority's Annual Report for 2023 is now available. The report provides a detailed overview of the authority's work during the year, reviewing, among other things, statistical data, investigations and projects, and its advocacy role. It also outlines the priorities for the coming years, provides a summary of administrative fines, and much more. The report also contains interesting insights into the role and benefits of the regulator, and what effective competition oversight actually does for consumers.
“The year 2023 was marked by the culmination of one of the most extensive investigations conducted by the Competition Authority, namely Samskip's infringement of competition law due to illegal collusion with Eimskip. Governments and companies must work together to create the conditions for effective competition in this important market.”, says Páll Gunnar Pálsson, Director of the Competition Authority.
The report aims to present information in a simple and transparent way, but it contains numerous links, allowing for a deeper dive into certain aspects. Among the findings is that the total number of merger cases in the year was 42, compared to 30 the previous year, while a higher proportion of cases concluded at the first stage of the investigation.
