Páll Gunnar Pálsson held speech at a conference Public procurement at Harpa on 7 November. There, he discussed opportunities to use competition to streamline public sector operations, improve quality and increase productivity. Among other things, he touched on how the Swedes have managed to improve their public sector operations by increasing user choice. Icelanders have taken a completely different path, which has led us into a dead end, not least in the healthcare system. He also discussed public procurement and the emphasis that should be placed on the design and implementation of tenders in order to foster competition. Páll then discussed competition assessment, a tool for strengthening competition and increasing productivity. Finally, he criticised the government for not having followed the recommendations made by the watchdog immediately after the crash to strengthen competition in specific sectors.
