The Competition Authority approves cooperation between travel agencies aimed at ensuring their customers can return home and limiting damage caused by COVID-19.

14 March 2020
Snowcap Mountain

Samkeppniseftirlitið hefur í dag heimilað samstarf ferðaskrifstofa með starfsleyfi frá Ferðamálastofu, sem miðar að því að tryggja að viðskiptavinir þeirra komist til síns heima og takmarka tjón sem hljótast mun af því fordæmalausa ástandi sem nú ríkir.

Samstarfið er bundið þeim skilyrðum að Ferðamálastofa meti samstarfið nauðsynlegt hverju sinni og að stofnunin sé þátttakandi eða sé gefinn kostur á að vera þátttakandi í öllum samskiptum sem lúta að samstarfinu. Tilgangur þessa er að tryggja að samstarf þessara keppinauta eigi sér aðeins stað að því marki sem Ferðamálastofa telur óhjákvæmilegt til að verja þá hagsmuni sem í húfi eru. Um leið er tryggt að Ferðamálastofa öðlist yfirsýn yfir þær aðgerðir sem keppinautar á markaðnum grípa til að þessu leyti.

The Tourist Board is then authorised to convene other tourism stakeholders to assess how to otherwise respond to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism industry, the consumer market, and the wider economy. Should a further exemption from the ban on collaboration between these parties be required, a decision will be taken on this in a separate case.

In implementing cooperation under this authorisation, care shall be taken to ensure that no coordination of prices or services occurs beyond what is necessary to protect the interests of tourists. For example, care shall be taken to ensure that cooperation between competitors does not lead to a slowdown in the development of tourism, which could otherwise result from the reduced competition.

The decision is available here.

Samkeppniseftirlitið hefur á síðustu dögum veitt Samtökum í ferðaþjónustu undanþágu til að bregðast við vanda sem stafar af COVID-19, sbr. ákvörðun nr. 9/2020. Einnig hefur eftirlitið heimilað samstarf sem miðar að því að tryggja fullnægjandi aðgengi að lyfjum, sbr. ákvörðun nr. 11/2020. Þá hefur eftirlitið á síðustu dögum heimilað samskipti fyrirtækja á ýmsum sviðum sem miðar að því að tryggja órofinn rekstur og fullnægjandi aðföng.
