
On Thursday, 14 March 2019, the Icelandic Federation of Trade Unions hosted a breakfast meeting on the pricing of foodstuffs in Iceland. Further information about the meeting and a livestream from it can be found here.
Páll Gunnar Pálsson, Director-General of the Competition Authority, was one of the speakers at the meeting and took part in a panel discussion. His speech can be accessed here , together with slides.
In his speech, Páll Gunnar emphasised that many people needed to play their part to improve consumer welfare. Firstly The Competition Authority must continue to ensure the enforcement of competition law in the groceries market. Secondly It is of the utmost importance that the government reduces any and all obstacles within its power, whether these be tariffs, other public charges or legislation that is designed to hinder competition. In the third place It is important that interest groups connected to the grocery market get to work to strengthen competition. And in the fourth and final part It is very urgent to strengthen consumer protection in the grocery market.
